Source of Inspiration: Ricky Gervais

One of the funniest people in the world (in my opinion) is Ricky Gervais. You may know or recognize him as David Brent from the British version of The Office , or from last year’s Ghost Town where he played a smug, pompous dentist who could see and talk to ghosts. A great movie which you should definitely checkout. Or you may recognize him from various guest appearances on The Daily Show, David Letterman, or from hosting this year’s Golden Globes awards show.

Besides being one of my favourite comedians, Ricky Gervais is also a source of business inspiration for me.

If you are at all familiar with Ricky Gervais, then you may know of all the different business ventures he has done or is currently involved in. They include:

Television series (Co-creator, writer, director, and star of The Office and Extras)
Movies (starred in Ghost Town, and co-wrote, directed, and starred in the recent DVD release, This Side Of The Truth)
Podcasts (available on iTunes)
Concerts (which are televised on HBO and available on DVD)
Flanimals (a series of children’s books)

Pretty impressive, I think. But what I find so inspiring is that he’s obviously doing what he loves (comedy and writing), and he isn’t dependent on any one source of income. I imagine the movie gigs pay the most but his other ventures (the podcasts and television series) provide a pretty modest and steady flow of income.

To me, Ricky Gervais represents what everyone should aim for: doing something that you love and building as many (or however many you can manage comfortably) income channels for it.
